Operation

The purpose of making some vehicles pass on the wrong side of the road is to allow movements from all directions. In a normal intersection with an existing infrastructure, there would be 3 cycles since 1 cycle for straight movements was eliminated through the use of a flyover or tunnel.

This is how the D.D.I. works. Left-turning and straight-going vehicles perpendicular to the flyover temporarily drive on the wrong side of the road. Pedestrians cross beside them. They may also pass through the innermost section of the road, which is the center island. Turning vehicles parallel to the flyover turn to the direction where the vehicles moving in all directions originated. Straight-going vehicles passing through the flyover move freely.

This video shows the efficiency of a diverging diamond interchange:

The D.D.I. is simply a flyover or tunnel intersection where the vehicles below or above the infrastructure pass through the wrong side of the road.

Definition

The diverging diamond interchange or D.D.I. is an unusual traffic system where vehicles that are perpendicular to the flyover or tunnel turn left or go straight by temporarily driving on the wrong side of the road! It eliminates the 2 cycles for turning. With the D.D.I. for intersections with existing infrastructures, there would be only 2 cycles. Each of these cycles will have straight and turning movements at the same time.
